Bringing life into the world on the farm is a truly special experience, and proper preparation is key. From must-have tools to helpful tips, join us on this journey as we explore the ins and outs of assembling the perfect goat birthing kit. Because every new beginning deserves the best start!
This is just a short list of some of the things we like to keep on hand and in our birthing bucket.
Gloves: To maintain a sterile environment during the birthing process and to protect both the person assisting and the newborn.
Old Towels: Used for cleaning and drying the newborns, providing warmth, and ensuring a clean birthing area.
Iodine: An antiseptic used to disinfect the umbilical cord stump, preventing infections in newborn.
Selenium/Vitamin E Paste: Essential for preventing nutritional deficiencies in newborns, promoting healthy growth and development.
Probiotics: To support the development of a healthy gut flora in newborns, aiding in digestion and overall health.
Bottles and Nipples: Used for feeding colostrum or milk to newborns if nursing is challenging or the mother is unavailable.
Electrolytes: To provide essential minerals and hydration, especially important for weak or dehydrated newborns.
Molasses: A source of quick energy, often used to boost the energy levels of a weak or lethargic newborn.
Preparation H: May be used to alleviate swelling or irritation in the birthing area of the mother goat.
Lube: To assist in a smoother birthing process by reducing friction and easing the passage of the kid.
Bulb Syringe: Used for suctioning mucus from the nose and mouth of newborns, helping them breathe more easily.
Thermometer: To monitor the body temperature of both the mother and the newborns, ensuring they are within a healthy range.
